Dr. Shelley Newman, is from Guelph, Ontario, the home of the oldest veterinary college in Canada - the Ontario Veterinary College. As a highschool co-op education student, Dr. Newman participated with pathologists at the Ontario Veterinary College, helping study the effects of a hereditary renal disease in Samoyed dogs, that was very similar to Alport's Syndrome in humans. This program exposure was what really got Dr. Newman hooked into veterinary studies, except she had strong interests in anatomic pathology since her acceptance.
Veterinary school concluded in the spring of 1990 - Go Penguins! At this time she went into practice in Toronto to utilize her clinical skills, but within 3 years she was back at OVC, enrolled in the DVSc program in anatomic pathology. Her thesis was on the effects of repeated vaccination in mink with distemper and its association with development of glomerular disease.
Following completion of her program she accepted a position as a Clinical Instructor, in Blacksburg, VA at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine where she spent three years, receiving her board certification with ACVP in 1998 .Upon her return to Ontario, she performed mammalian and specialized fur bearing mammal and poultry pathology for 2 years at the Animal Health Laboratory in Guelph, before returning to the US. She worked as a staff pathologist at the Animal Medical Center in NYC. The strong interest and experience with oncologic pathology, immunohistochemistry, canine mast cell tumors, ferret adrenal disease, ocular pathology, neuroendocrine tumors and pet bird pathology developed.
Wanting more exposure to research and teaching, Dr. Newman accepted an assistant professor position in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, where she remained for almost 15 years, proceeding through the ranks of associate professor to full professor with tenure. Her interest in administrative positions grew and she eventually left to pursue a position in higher education administration. She is excited to now be back in pathology diagnostics full-time since the launch of Newman Specialty VetPath this past fall.
Dr. Newman's experience as a pathologist in a private laboratory, a provincial diagnostic laboratory, several university facilities and a large privately run practice, allow her to bring a wealth of experience to her diagnostic service. Additionally, her experience with all types of animals, including exotics, wildlife, fur-bearing mammals, zoo animals, fish and most recently marine mammals and invertebrates, gives her a breadth of species experience as well. She is likely best known in the pathology discipline for her system strengths in dermatopathology, pancreatic pathology, oncologic pathology, gastrointestinal pathology and renal pathology.
