FAQs

1) What is a necropsy?  An examination that is performed on a deceased animal, similar to an autopsy in a person to find out why they were sick or died.

2) What is a biopsy?  A small piece of a tissue taken from a live animal to identify the cause of a disease process.

3) What is histology?  This is the study of tissues under the microscope, to assess for disease

processes such as cancer, infection or inflammation.

4) How do you become a veterinary pathologist?  Once you become a veterinarian you can then do specialty training and write specialty board exams.  Once you pass which shows you have an overall good understanding of the discipline and you become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists if you live and work in North America.

5) Can pathologists specialize in one type of animal? It is not so easy.  Over my career I have performed examinations on all species from marine mammals, sea turtles, fish, horseshoe crabs, domestic pets, poultry, fur bearing animals, livestock, wildlife and zoo animals. It is what makes it so exciting.

6) What is the most interesting animal you have examined?  Horseshoe crab, because it is so prehistoric and so different from mammals.
